Families and Communities Together (FACT) is an alliance of families, schools and communities working together to discourage the use of alcohol, inhalants, tobacco and other drugs among young people. FACT is a branch of the Lowe Family Foundation (LFF), an organization born of one family's firsthand experience with the devastation caused by alcoholism. Like many others presented with the challenges of this disease, the Lowe family believes they were too slow to recognize that the behavior of a family member was neither normal nor healthy. When that reality became unavoidable, they say, they did not know how to ask for help or the questions to ask. In 1999, the Lowe family set up a foundation to provide support for people who are trying to cope with alcohol and other drug abuse in their families. "We know from personal experience the pain and anguish this disease inflicts upon all members of the family," says Kathy Lowe Petersen. "We want people to always remember that they are not alone when they reach out for help on the road to recovery."
